Elateq Awarded InnovateMass Grant
Elateq, Inc., an advanced water treatment company, has been awarded a $67,250 grant by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) through their InnovateMass program. InnovateMass is created to provide strategic support to companies deploying clean energy technologies with a strong potential for commercialization. For Elateq, this support will be utilized for the installation of solar-powered water treatment full-scale installation. This is a testament to our commitment to providing sustainable water treatment solutions in a highly energy-efficient manner. “As we’re finalizing the preparations to start the system installation, we’re thankful for the support from MassCEC which brings Elateq our first commercial installation!” – Dr. Ljiljana Rajic, Elateq’s Chief Science Officer and Co-Founder. About MassCEC The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) is a state economic development agency dedicated to accelerating the growth of the clean energy sector across the Commonwealth to spur job creation, deliver statewide environmental benefits and to secure long-term economic growth for the people of Massachusetts. MassCEC works to increase the adoption of clean energy while driving down costs and delivering financial, environmental, and economic development benefits to energy users and utility customers across the state.
Elateq Inc. Awarded a Competitive Grant from the National Science Foundation
We’re excited to announce that Elateq, Inc. recently won $236,645 from the National Science Foundation SBIR Phase I program to develop novel technology for the degradation of per- and polyfluorinated compounds (PFAS), widely known as “forever chemicals”, in water. Through this grant, we are also collaborating with Dr. Rainer Lohmann, director at the URI Superfund Research Center “STEEP“, as we are eager to collectively work on a sustainable solution for this complex issue. NSF SBIR Phase I award will allow Elateq to offer cost-effective and energy-efficient solutions for removing this class of toxic chemicals from water as they affect almost all water sources in the country. “NSF is proud to support the technology of the future by thinking beyond incremental developments and funding the most creative, impactful ideas across all markets and areas of science and engineering,” said Andrea Belz, Division Director of the Division of Industrial Innovation and Partnerships at NSF. “With the support of our research funds, any deep technology startup or small business can guide basic science into meaningful solutions that address tremendous needs.” About the National Science Foundation’s Small Business Programs: America’s Seed Fund (https://seedfund.nsf.gov/) powered by NSF awards $200 million annually to startups and small businesses, transforming scientific discovery into products and services with commercial and societal impact. Startups working across almost all areas of science and technology can receive up to $2 million to support research and development (R&D), helping de-risk technology for commercial success. America’s Seed Fund is congressionally mandated through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. Once a small business is awarded a Phase I SBIR/STTR grant (up to $275,000), it becomes eligible to apply for a Phase II (up to $1,000,000). Small businesses with Phase II funding are eligible to receive up to $500,000 in additional matching funds with qualifying third-party investments or sales. The NSF is an independent federal agency with a budget of about $8.5 billion that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering.
Elateq: Awardee of the FORGE Product Development Grant
The FORGE Product Development Grant will allow Elateq to upgrade and develop part of its current water treatment system. We will use this funding to transform our new and improved device prototype into a user-friendly product. Scaling and commercializing our water treatment system will help make clean water more widely sustainable and accessible.
Elateq Hosted Station1 Fellows
Over the summer of 2022, we hosted two Station1 Fellows working on Elateq’s water treatment technology. We were thrilled to have Victor and Grace joining our team this summer and wish them good luck in their next endeavors! Congrats on completing the fellowship! Station1 is a new nonprofit higher education institution, founded by researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2016, that is paving a pathway of opportunity through a new model of learning and research – socially-directed science and technology. This model integrates science and technology with humanistic fields and the social sciences to interrogate, understand, and shape technologically-driven societal impact towards more equitable, just, ethical, and sustainable outcomes. Core to the Station1 model is broadening access and opportunity for students of color, those from low-income households, and those who are the first generation to college. To advance this mission, Station1 designs and delivers transformative education, research, innovation, and collective impact programs and initiatives employing unique hybrid methods powered by leading and emerging digital infrastructure. Station1 collaborates with partners worldwide, including socially-minded startup companies, established industries, the social and public sectors, and academia. Victor MukoraStation1 Fellow 2022 “I am a rising fourth year student at Virginia Tech majoring in Computational Modeling and Data Analytics with minors in Data and Decisions, Statistics, and Mathematics. Generally, I am extremely passionate about utilizing computer science to enhance solar energy. Additionally, I would love to work right at the intersection of innovation in solar energy with other fields like 5G, cyber and national security, electric grid systems, advanced military technology, and all the like! Truly, I am very honored and delighted to have been a part of Elateq and play a role in programming their controller unit.” Grace JimenezStation1 Fellow 2022 “As a student of Santa Monica College for Environmental Engineering, and as well as a first-generation, lower middle class Latina student, I strive to educate and create a group of like-minded individuals who understand the power of community and how it can be utilized to build solutions to the social and technical problems the world faces today and make these solutions sustainable for future generations. The work I have done with Elateq was truly been an incredible experience. Understanding how Elateq’s innovative technology works has given me so much hope in the future of sustainability, especially for water resources.”
